Talking to a friend the other day, I asked her about facials, knowing that I would be writing about the topic again sometime soon.

Have you ever had a facial? “Yes.”

What did you think of it? “Fantastic. My skin glowed, and I felt like a new person.”

How many times have you gotten a facial since? “Oh, that was my first and only facial.”

My friend looked sheepish, like it was something to be ashamed of (I’m sure talking to a person who performs facials for a living had something to do with it).

And I must admit I was a little shocked. This is a woman who takes great care in her appearance and always has perfectly coiffed hair and well-done nails.

Why isn’t she treating herself more often? “I didn’t know I was supposed to get it done more often. It seemed like a fun, one-time thing.”

Like your nails and hair, your skin should be a top priority for looking your best. Unlike nails and hair, however, your skin is composed of living and dead cells, and probably needs even more attention to detail.

So how often should you be getting a facial? The standard recommendation is about every 30 days, depending on your skin type, any problems, and what your in-home skin care routine is.

Why monthly? That’s roughly how long it takes for your skin to begin developing dead skin cells and start looking dull. Regular facials keep skin looking clear and toned.

Getting regular facials have the following benefits:

  • Frequent insights from skin care experts, who also become more acquainted with your unique skin type and can make better decisions on how to care for your skin.
  • The correct amount of exfoliation for your skin type. Too much and you risk damaging your skin. Too little and you are just wasting your time and your money.
  • Extraction of clogged pores BEFORE they become an issue.
  • Intense hydration to keep skin looking youthful.
  • Facial stimulation through massage and other techniques that promote good circulation, collagen production, and a more youthful appearance.
  • Expert advice on at-home care maintenance.
  • You time.
