Sometimes called permanent makeup, micropigmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure to help you skip applying makeup in the morning and enhance your natural features.
One of the most popular sites to apply pigmentation is to the lips. Here are six things you should know about permanent lip color.
-
Micropigmentation enhances color, not fullness
Just like lipstick, adding pigment to your lips does not create fullness. The procedure can define lips by shading your lips a darker color, but you will not suddenly have plumper, fuller lips. You can opt for a shade darker on the outline of your lips and that can create the illusion of more full lips, however.
-
You can get a color close to your natural lip color
Don’t want a bold lip all the time? No problem. However, a word of warning: the more natural the color, the more you will need to have touch ups in the future. Which brings me to the next point ….
-
You will need future touch ups, and it isn’t permanent
Micropigmentation uses pigment, not traditional tattoo ink. Pigment fades over time. I recommend touch ups every year to year-and-a-half. If you undergo a lot of exfoliation treatments, you may need to go more often.
But here’s the good news: If you don’t like your lip color or you want to change it up, the procedure isn’t permanent. If you don’t want to wait for it to fade away, you can have it easily removed with a laser.
-
It can be uncomfortable
Lips are sensitive and needles are sharp. It is reasonable to expect some level of discomfort when you are having your lips micropigmented. You can have a topical applied to help minimize the pain, however.
-
There will be downtime
Your lips will not be camera ready for another 10 days after the procedure. During the first four days, expect swelling and dryness. Like with a chemical peel, you should plan your public outings accordingly.
-
Some people aren’t candidates for micropigmentation
Micropigmentation doesn’t work for every skin type. Caution should be used especially for darker skin tones. And if you suffer from cold sores, then a flare-up could ruin the procedure. Make sure you take your medication to prevent them.
