I get it. Sometimes skincare is the last thing you think of before the big office party or the family photo shoot. And by that time, it may seem like it’s too late to do anything except slather on some extra foundation and hope for the best.

But there’s a fast, effective treatment that not only will improve the look and texture of your skin, but also will help your makeup go on smoother and create an even more fantastic you.

I’m talking about dermaplaning. Dermaplaning is literally shaving your face. It addresses the fine vellus hairs (and the not-so-fine, distracting upper lip hairs) and exfoliates the skin, leaving it smoother and brighter.

Your makeup will also stay on longer. Makeup artists often ask clientele to undergo a dermaplaning treatment a couple days before a big event. The treatment won’t cause any redness or break any capillaries, and you’ll be ready for your close-up.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning using a straight-edge facial razor to gently exfoliate the skin and remove near-invisible hairs. There is no downtime and it usually is appropriate for all skin types.

One of the great things about this treatment is that it can be done during your lunch hour and you can return to normal activities.

During treatment, the blade is pulled across your skin to remove layers of dead cells and the tiny peach fuzz, both of which can make your complexion look lackluster and can even contribute to clogged pores that cause your skin to break out. There is no pain (despite the use of a razor) and the results are instant.

I recommend doing this treatment once a month for the best results.

There are DIY, at-home versions of this treatment. You can buy an at-home razor specifically designed for light exfoliation and addressing vellus hairs. This can be a great option for touchups between in-clinic treatments or for someone with a lot of facial hair to address. However, if you’re looking for deeper, more effective exfoliation, go with a professional. As with anything, DIY has its place, but usually a professional will give you the results you’re looking for.
