So, you’ve read or heard about dermaplaning and are thinking this is the path to a beautiful, radiant face. You’re not wrong, but before you plunge ahead, there are some things you should know.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a technique that exfoliates the skin using a straight-edge-like facial razor. The blade is pulled across your skin to remove layers of dead cells, as well as the tiny peach fuzz that covers your face, which can make your complexion look lackluster and can even contribute to clogged pores that cause your skin to break out. There is no pain and the results are instant; with the dead skin cells gone, your skin is bright and as soft as a baby’s.

Before Your Treatment

While dermaplaning can help you look years younger, there are precautions you need to take. First, avoid retinoids or retinols for at least one week prior to treatment, as they could cause skin irritation. Second, do not have other facial procedures, such as chemical peels, before treatment. Third, if you have an active cold sore or are experiencing an active acne breakout, you should postpone your treatment.

After Your Treatment

There is no downtime following treatment, but for about 30 minutes after your treatment your skin will have a warm, pinkish glow that will gradually fade. For the next 72 hours, however, your skin will be more sensitive and prone to irritation. As such, you may not be able to tolerate some of your normal skin care products. If this happens, cleanse with a gentle, non-acid cleanser. My favorite is VI Aesthetics Cleanser. Light and gentle to the skin.

If significant skin flaking occurs, or if your skin becomes broken, call your aesthetician right away. Avoid pulling on flaking or broken skin. Makeup may be applied as long as the skin is not broken. And always, always wear an SPF of 30 or greater when exposed to any sunlight.
