Acne is an incredibly frustrating problem that can extend well beyond the teen years. Those red blotches can distract from a person’s appearance and can also leave scars behind.

According to American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects nearly 50 million Americans. More than 40 percent of teens have acne or acne scarring that requires treatment from a skincare professional.

In the grocery store and online, customers are bombarded with products that make lofty promises but are short on delivery. It’s a $2.2 billion industry that includes prescription and over-the-counter products that may or may not work.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are products that work — even if you feel like you’ve tried everything. The tailored-to-you advice from a skincare professional can go a long way in helping your face get and stay unblemished.

At Skintherapy, we have a number of go-to procedures. But, first, let’s get a little technical.

What is Acne?

Acne vulgaris, the scientific name for all those pimples, is a skin condition caused when dead skin cells and skin oil clog pores. Mild acne is a few pimples or red spots, and severe acne is when pimples are large and form large, red cysts.

While acne typically begins in the teenage years, the condition can present itself in any age group (much to the dismay of millions).

Acne is caused by a number of factors, including overproduction of oil glands, blocking of hair follicles, and growth of bacteria on hair follicles. You might be thinking: But I don’t have facial hair on my cheek! But you do. Humans have tiny, almost-invisible hairs on nearly every skin surface, including your cheek, forehead, and nose. Not to get too medical, but it’s called vellus hair and it grows everywhere except for palms of hands, soles of feet, parts of genitalia, lips, back of the ear, and on scar tissue.

But you didn’t come here for a dissertation on acne. You’re here because you’re fed up and want an effective solution. Some people may need all the solutions we present or multiple treatments of a singular solution, or just to ramp-up their at-home skincare routine. A skincare professional can help you decide what’s right for you.

There are three treatments I think of when I see pimples: deep-cleansing facial treatment, VI Peel, and/or Topix acne products.

Deep-Cleansing Facial Treatment

Facials are a great way to minimize pores and cleanse the skin. One of my favorites for treating acne is the HydroFacial we offer.

This facial is a hydrating and non-irritating treatment that is suitable for most skin types, including thin or aging skin, all skin colors, and dry skin or oily skin. Many people report seeing visible skin refinement and an even, radiant skin tone after just one treatment. Depending on your skin type frequency will vary, but it is suggested no more than twice a month is necessary.

VI Peels

Chemical peels have come a long way and are often used to treat acne. One of the most effective peel treatment is the VI Peel.

A VI Peel treatment is quick and has little downtime, producing visible results in days. pharmaceutical-grade topical application that contains TCA for deep-scar healing, phenol for cleansing, salicylic acid for exfoliation, Retin-A to combat wrinkles, and vitamin C for antioxidant and exfoliation.

At-Home Maintenance

In between treatments or, sometimes, instead of treatments, an at-home routine should be established. My favorite acne line is Topix, which not only fights acne, but also offers anti-aging benefits for the skin.

Topix offers a variety of intensities for different skin types and problems. We carry the line at our clinic, and we can help you determine the best product for your skin type and problem.
